Architectural millwork is the built-in joinery made for one building and no other. Reception desks, feature walls, panelling, library and display shelving, boardroom casework, stair components, custom doors and jambs, and the trim details that tie them together. It is specified on a drawing, manufactured to that drawing, and installed to fit the room as built rather than the room as designed.
That last distinction is where most projects succeed or fail. A commercial space that has settled, a heritage building with walls three inches out over their length, a ceiling that slopes where the drawing said it was flat: none of that appears in the model. Millwork made properly is cut for the site, which means measuring the site before cutting anything.

Species and finish carry most of the cost and nearly all of the character. Painted MDF gives the flattest surface and the most consistent colour, which is why it dominates panelling and reception work. Stain-grade hardwoods, maple, white oak and walnut, show grain and movement, which is what people want in a boardroom or a library, and they demand tighter material selection so that adjacent panels read as one piece. Veneered panel work sits between the two and is usually the right answer for large vertical surfaces where solid timber would move.
Hardware is the quiet part of a specification. Soft-close runners, concealed hinges rated for the door weight actually used, push-latch mechanisms on handleless work: these components decide whether a piece still feels right in year seven. We specify to the load rather than to the price sheet, because the hinge is not where a millwork budget should be saved.
Finishing happens before delivery wherever the piece allows it, since a controlled finish beats a site finish every time. Site work is reserved for scribes, fillers and the joints that only exist once the piece is standing in the room.

What separates it from cabinetry bought off a shelf is that nothing about it is standard: dimensions, species, finish and hardware are all specified for the project rather than chosen from a catalogue.
Stock cabinetry comes in fixed increments and gets fitted to the room using filler panels wherever the room does not co-operate. Millwork is cut to the room. In a square space with standard dimensions the difference is mostly cost, and stock will usually win. In a space with sloped ceilings, out-of-level floors, existing bulkheads or a heritage envelope, stock produces gaps and visible fillers where millwork produces a continuous line.
Enough variables sit inside a millwork quote that a number given without drawings is close to meaningless, so here is what actually drives it. Linear footage sets the base. Finish is the largest single lever: moving from painted MDF to stain-grade hardwood can add most of a third to the manufacturing line. Tall and full-height units cost several times what the same run of base casework costs, because they carry more material, more hardware and a harder install. From approved shop drawings, most residential projects run six to ten weeks and most commercial fit-outs run eight to fourteen. Almost all of the variation sits in the finish schedule and in how quickly selections get approved. Because manufacturing happens locally rather than overseas, a change coming back from site adds days rather than restarting a shipping cycle.

We take the design intent, produce shop drawings for approval, and flag anything in the drawing set that will not survive contact with the built condition before it goes to manufacture.
