Why a custom vanity fits where a stock one cannot

Bathrooms are the most awkward rooms in a house to fit cabinetry into. The plumbing comes up through the floor or out of the wall in a position nobody chose, the room is rarely square, and the useful width is usually a few inches off whatever the standard sizes are. A stock vanity deals with that using filler panels down each side, which is why so many bathrooms have a two inch strip of painted wood beside the cabinet.

Built to the room, those inches go back into the cabinet. In a small bathroom that is the difference between having drawers and not having them.

Drawers around the plumbing

The reason most stock vanities have doors rather than drawers is the P-trap. It sits exactly where a drawer box wants to be, so the cheap answer is an open cupboard with a shelf in it. The better answer is a drawer built around the trap, notched at the back so the box clears the pipework and still pulls out fully.

It costs more to make, and it is the single change people notice most once a bathroom is finished. A drawer shows you everything you own at once. A cupboard hides most of it behind the front row.

Counters, sinks, and what each one asks of the cabinet

The sink decides more about the cabinet than the door style does.

An undermount sink needs a counter that can carry it, so stone or a solid surface rather than laminate, and it takes the most usable depth out of the top drawer. A vessel sink sits on top, which frees up the drawer below while raising the working height, so the cabinet comes down to compensate. An integrated top, where the basin and the counter are one piece, is the easiest to keep clean and the least forgiving if the cabinet is not dead level.

Standard vanity height is lower than most adults find comfortable, because it was set when bathrooms were designed around children. Where everyone using the room is an adult, the cabinet can come up, and it is a difference you feel every day.

What actually fails in a bathroom

Bathroom cabinetry fails in three places, and none of them is the door style.

The toe kick, where water sits after a shower and wicks up into an unsealed edge. The sink cut-out, where a poorly sealed edge takes on moisture every time somebody washes their face. Hinges and runners, which corrode in a room that goes humid twice a day, every day.

What matters in the specification is a moisture resistant core, a properly sealed edge everywhere water can reach, and hardware rated for a bathroom rather than a bedroom. Cabinetry that looks identical on the showroom floor costs a fraction and fails in those same three places within a few years.

Linen and bathroom storage

Most bathrooms have nowhere sensible for towels, and the linen closet usually ended up in the hallway. A tall cabinet beside the vanity, or a shallow one above the toilet, recovers that without taking floor space the room does not have.

Depth matters more than width here. A cupboard deep enough to lose things in is worse than a shallow one where you can see everything at once.
