Your contractor wants the fridge model number before he orders cabinets, and you have not picked a fridge yet. He is not being difficult. The appliances set the dimensions the cabinetry has to be built around, and once cabinets are ordered, changing those dimensions means changing the cabinets.
This is one of the most common points of friction in a kitchen renovation, and it usually comes from a reasonable assumption: that cabinets are the big permanent thing and appliances just slot in afterward. In practice it runs the other way. The appliance dimensions come first, and the cabinet layout is drawn to fit them.
Why The Appliance Comes Before The Cabinet
Every major appliance has a specification sheet from the manufacturer with exact measurements: overall width, height and depth, the required opening, door swing, hinge clearance, and how much air space the unit needs to run without overheating. Those numbers are not close to standard between brands, and they are often not even standard within one brand’s own lineup.
A fridge is the clearest example. A counter-depth model and a standard-depth model in the same width can differ by several inches front to back, which changes whether the fridge sits flush with your cabinets or juts past them. Some fridges need clearance on the hinge side to open the door far enough to pull the crisper drawers out. If the cabinet beside it is built tight to a wall, the door hits the cabinet and the drawers will not clear. That is not a problem you notice on the drawing. It is a problem you notice the first time you try to get the vegetables out.
The same logic applies across the kitchen:
- A slide-in range needs a specific opening width and often a specific countertop cut, and the cabinets on either side have to land on those lines.
- A dishwasher needs a set opening and, in a frameless layout, sometimes a filler strip so the door clears the adjacent cabinet or handle.
- A hood or over-range microwave sets the height and width of the upper cabinets above it, and the venting has to run somewhere the cabinets do not block.
None of these are guesses a cabinetmaker can safely make. They come off the spec sheet for the exact model you buy.
Panel-Ready Appliances Change The Cabinets Entirely
If you are considering a panel-ready fridge or dishwasher, meaning one built to accept a custom door panel so it disappears into the run of cabinetry, the model number matters even more. Panel-ready units publish the exact panel size, weight limit and mounting hardware they require. The cabinet door that fronts them is built to those numbers, not to match your other doors by eye.
Order that door before the appliance is confirmed and you are guessing at a panel size, a hinge type and a handle location that the manufacturer has already defined. When the real unit arrives and the panel does not fit its brackets, the fix is a remake, on your dime and on your timeline.
What Happens When The Specs Arrive Late
Here is the part that is worth being plain about. Cabinetry is manufactured to the drawings that were approved. Once a run is cut, finished and delivered, changing a dimension is not an edit. It is a new cabinet.
If you finalize the fridge after the cabinets are built and it turns out to be two inches wider than the opening, someone is paying to modify or rebuild the cabinets next to it. If the range you actually bought needs a deeper counter cut than the one drawn, the countertop template, which is usually made after cabinets are installed, gets held up. A late appliance decision does not just cost a cabinet. It can push the countertop, the backsplash and the final install date back by weeks, because each of those trades is waiting on the one before it.
This is the same dependency that shows up on a deficiency list at the end of a job. A door that will not clear a fridge hinge, a filler that is too narrow, a panel that does not sit flush: these get flagged at inspection, and by then the cheap moment to fix them has passed.
The Honest Version: You Do Not Need The Final Purchase, You Need The Model
What your contractor actually needs is not for you to have the appliances sitting in your garage. He needs the confirmed model numbers so he can pull the specification sheets and draw to them. You can order the appliances later, as long as you order the exact models the cabinets were drawn around.
That distinction matters, because it means you are not being rushed into buying everything at once. You are being asked to commit to the dimensions. If you switch models after cabinets are ordered, you own the consequences, and a careful cabinetmaker will tell you that up front rather than absorbing a surprise later.
There is a reasonable counter-argument worth naming. If you truly cannot decide on a fridge in time, a good layout can sometimes be drawn to a generous standard opening with adjustable fillers, so a range of common models will fit. That buys flexibility, but it is a compromise, not a substitute. It usually means a slightly less tailored fit and some visible filler, and it still will not save you if you land on a panel-ready or oversized unit outside the range you planned for.
